Welcome to the third month of the year! Although February is known for love, let’s enjoy celebrating love every day. Sharing love with myself has been so rewarding therefore self-care is an important act I engage in. Want to know a secret?? If you want to get to know someone really special get to know yourself.
I became a licensed esthetician to learn and share knowledge about the biggest organ in the human body, skin. What works for one client may not work for another. If you do not have one already, I highly suggest seeking out an esthetician to provide a skincare analysis so that you can be clear on your skin type as well as receiving a proper routine to gain the results you are looking for with products specific to your skin type. It is the ultimate skinvestment if you ask me and it will not disappoint. Usually, clients will schedule one facial a month but the gaaaag is one facial a month will not get you clear skin. Drinking water, being consistent, being conscious of what you feed your body, and being dedicated to your skincare routine on a daily basis can offer results.
Commit to cleansing, toning, and moisturizing daily and then choose a day that you can commit to and designate that day to give yourself a full facial outside of your scheduled appointments with your esthetician. We don’t always have time and that is understandable but by making time we are rewarding ourselves by spending time with the most important person, that’s right, you. Go all in by focusing on exfoliating, giving yourself a mask, incorporating massage to relieve stress/tension, and just enjoy caring for yourself. Being comfortable and happy in your skin isn’t always easy so indulging in this act of self-love may allow you the time to pour back into yourself and do me a favor, just receive the delicious vibes. While enjoying your mask, pour yourself a cup of tea, speak some affirmations, include some meditation, and find your glow. Beauty is an inside job and then it flows to the outside.
Most often I see and hear clients talk about the products they are using and the products don’t always align with their skin type. I want to briefly discuss skin types and give a skin care routine for daily care. I also want to mention that there is a difference between skin types and skin concerns.
Skin types:
Oily skin type: could appear shiny or greasy, presents larger pore size, prone to breakouts and clogged areas, an over production of sebum from your sebaceous gland.
Dry skin type: lacks adequate sebum production, present small pores, sensitivity, light flakes, tightness, rough texture, dull appearance, and/ or redness and this could also depend on the season.
Normal Skin type: Radiant appearance, no blemishes or redness, few breakouts and clogged areas, smooth texture, a great balance of sebum and moisture. Less is more with this skin type and bringing in a vitamin c serum would be helpful along with monthly facial.
Sensitive skin: is one majority of people assume they have; I suggest getting a skin analysis to be sure. if you should have this skin type, a simple routine can help you gain results. Cleanse, hydrate, and, protect your skin. Fragrance free products are suggested as well as soothing products and if you are introducing new products patch testing will also be a huge benefit to you.
Combination skin: is the most complex because you have to balance different areas. It could be dry and oily. Your t-zone area can be oily and the outer frame of the face can be dry. You will find that you will use a combination of products specific to these areas during your skin routine.
Skin concerns to name a few are ageing skin, dull skin, dehydrated skin, and troubled skin which can also be acne and others skin conditions.
You might question if your skin type can change and the answer is environmental factors, age, hormones, and health related issues may affect your skin overtime. As far as the seasons are concerned our skin tends to be oilier in the summer and drier and maybe flakier when it is colder.
Our skin glows when we are happy and healthy.
Let’s get you right by adding these four tips in the morning and in the evening.
1. Double cleansing during your facial regimen allows you to cleanse the surface of the skin with an oil-based cleanser. This is helpful for makeup users and ridding the skin of oily substances that may build up. This makes it easier for the second cleanse with a water-based cleanser because it doesn’t have to fight through an extra layer of pore clogging impurities that stay around even after washing your face once. Remove cleanser using warm water.
2. Exfoliating is a facial scrub once or twice a week to remove dead skin cells. This is done after a cleanse. Not recommended more than once or twice a week to prevent stripping the skin of its protective acid mantle and natural moisturizers.
3. Toning the skin with a toner or astringent restores the natural ph (potential hydrogen) of the skin after cleansing or exfoliating the skin. These should be selected based on skin type.
4. Moisturizing helps protect the skin from irritation and environmental damage, keeps skin soft, hydrated, helps reduce dryness, and creates smooth base for applying make-up.
5. Protecting the skin with a spf is important because it protects from sun exposure. Daily use of sunscreen prevents premature aging of the skin.
I want to put emphasis on this next sentence; Please make sure the products used are specific to your skin type.
When selecting a sunscreen, it protects from UVA and UVB rays. Want to be sure the product has ingredients that blocks and absorbs. What do I mean by that? A cool thing I learned was UVA and UVB blockers block out the sun’s burning rays by reflecting them off the surface of the skin. (Examples are titanium dioxide and zinc oxide) Absorbers, absorb the sun’s rays and deflect them throughout the layers of the skin. (An example is methoxycinnamate.)
What is a patch test? This is a process that allows you to determine whether the product is too strong, an irritant, or if you are allergic. Apply the product to a less noticeable, small patch of skin to see how it reacts to the chemistry of your skin. Although it is simple you have to be patient because the result may not be instant. We want your skin to get better not worse so when trying new products do not do them all at once so you can pin point where the irritation came from. This can also be discussed with your esthetician; you will become partners and it is nice not to have to do it alone.
Why is PH important for our skin? Our PH measures how acidic or alkaline something is. PH is reliant on our skin’s acid mantle protects the skin from external toxins. (Bacteria, allergens, or pollution)
